Hiding out near Fenton's house

"He's not here"
Sanders to Jim and Phil

As he watches Sanders, Jim and Phil pass below, Charles hears them reveal that the house in front of him is Fenton's. After quickly checking the driveway — probably for fresh footprints — Sanders is convinced that Charles has not found his way to the property. As they depart, Sanders informs his colleagues that they are all to return later — to retrieve Fenton's rifles.

Description: 'Fenton house' is a private residence in the heart of the Monsal valley — much renovated in the years since 1977. The dry-stone wall has been replaced; a new gateway been built; and the grounds of the house landscaped.

Where is it?: The house is clearly visible from the public roadway, and is situated between the crossroads in the centre of the valley and the small parking area in the valley floor.

Where's the best vantage point?: Care must be exercised when photographing in the area, as the house is a private residence. The shot is taken from several feet up on a steep bank on the far side of the roadway. With care, it is possible to approximate the camera's original position

What about access?: Fans should not trespass in any way on the driveway or grounds of the house.

Anything else?: It is not known for certain if the interior sequences — during which Charles raids Fenton's larder and searches for his notebooks — were filmed inside this house. Numerous other Monsal locations are nearby — including the bridge beneath which Charles hides; the roof which Sanders and Jim are repairing; the roadway along which Charles cycles and many others.
